A Message from Brian Wong and Ted Kalmus: Tuition 2015-16
Dear Billings Families,
One of the important jobs that the Board of Trustees faces each year is the review of our budget and the task of setting tuition. This is work we take very seriously, as it is our first priority to maintain the excellence of the Billings Middle School program.
We balance this commitment with the profound understanding that an excellent independent school education is a significant investment. We are deeply grateful that your family has chosen Billings. We also understand that, as a rule, independent school tuition raises are unpredictable and can be an additional stretch on resources.
That is why we have set tuition for the 2015-16 school year at $27,800, an increase of less than 1%, and one of the smallest in school history. Please remember that, at Billings, tuition includes all books and required activities, such as trips and technology fees. Watching the rising costs of living in Seattle, we feel we must do what we can to minimize our tuition growth. This is the right thing to do for our current families, and supports an important Billings value - remaining broadly accessible to families across the city.
Beginning next year, Billings will also adopt a “Plateau Tuition Model.” This means that tuition rates upon entering Billings will remain the same during your entire tenure with us. In our discussions with many of you over the last year, a large number of families expressed a desire for greater predictability in costs. We hope that this commitment will help all of our families manage and plan their finances with greater ease and security.
At the same time, Billings will not waver in its continued commitment to supporting broad financial access through need-based scholarships. Year after year, our community has endorsed this effort as a core value of the school, and supported funding efforts that bring our level of financial aid well above the national average. We are proud of this commitment and what it means to the community of our school.
We trust this will come as welcome news for your family and to those considering Billings in the coming years. If you have any comments or questions, or would just like to learn more about the budgeting process at Billings, please don’t hesitate to contact either of us. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for entrusting your child’s education to Billings!
